Combatting Depression:

Beating The Blues

Depression can be a funny word.  It can be used to mean that we are feeling off colour that particular day and are likely to be grumpy with those with know, or it can be used to refer to the mental health condition that affects many people at different times in their lives.  Clinical depression, as the latter is sometimes referred to, can be debilitating and can lead some to despair that they will never see the light at the end of the tunnel.


While 'feeling blue' with a temporary low mood is part of the human condition, more severe depression can sap energy and hope, leading the sufferer to lose enjoyment in the things they once held dear.  There are many ways to tackle clinical depression, ranging from prescription medicines and herbal remedies to counselling and meditation.  In my experience, all have merit and can be helpful in moving a person forward, out from under the dark cloud that covers them.  Once a sufferer understands that there are avenues out there that can be explored, hope can return and the future can look a little less bleak.


An effective way of learning how to live with low mood, in order to eventually live without it, is through a therapeutic relationship with someone who understands where you are coming from.  Sometimes small changes in lifestyle or in our relationships can bring big benefits.  Sometimes the circumstances of a situation cannot be changed, however much we may want them to be, and so living in a more accepting way with current pressures can in itself bring relief.  A good balanced diet and regular exercise can be very helpful in keeping your body in shape, and giving yourself the opportunity to get proper rest and wholesome sleep is also important.  Balance is key.


As a therapeutic counsellor I have seen many people pass out from under their own personal cloud and into the sunshine again.  One thing that always stands out to me is that when a person is on the road to recovery, joy is very often found not only in the big things and memorable events, but also in the simple, everyday occurrences such as the bird song in the morning or the pink sky surrounding a particularly beautiful setting sun.
