Here in the U.K. the daylight hours are becoming fewer in number and so the days are becoming shorter; it is now dusk at 5 p.m. rather than at 10 p.m. as we were all used to at the height of summer.  There can seem less time to do what needs to be done on some days - the lawn cannot so easily be mowed at 9 p.m. in October as it could in August!

People in the street are now wrapping up to protect themselves from the elements with coats, jumpers and jackets, which are far removed from the shorts and t-shirts which were sported only weeks ago.  As the seasons change, so do people's expectations of what can be done and how they should go about preparing for the day.

As it sit with clients I have often observed that those who navigate the circumstances of their personal situation most successfully are often those who pay attention to the prevailing wind and adjust their sails accordingly.  For a client to know when is best to try and effect change, and when to sit tight and ride out their difficulties, seems often to be one of the keys to them feeling they have successfully tackled whatever they are struggling with.

Often if a client is in distress they understandably want a rapid resolution to their problem.  A person suffering with depression may feel that they have struggled long enough and now want immediate relief.  It seems that if it is acknowledged that low mood can take time to develop, it is more readily accepted that putting in place strategies for managing it and aiming to master it will take a little time also.

Similarly, periods of loss or bereavement may need to be accepted as just that - periods of time that cannot necessarily be speeded up or bypassed with a shortcut.  That is not to say that those difficult feelings will persist forever, but rather that given time the darkness can brighten, just as the early dusk gives way each following year to light nights and summer warmth.
